“Give all of us gathered here tonight the strength to remember that life is so very fragile. We are all vulnerable, and we will all, at some point in our lives… fall. We will all fall. We must carry this in our hearts… that what we have is special. That it can be taken from us, and when it is taken from us, we will be tested. We will be tested to our very souls. We will now all be tested. It is these times, it is this pain, that allows us to look inside ourselves.”

-Friday Night Lights, 1x01, “Pilot”

i recently got hooked on friday night lights, a drama based in a small fictional town in texas, a place where life seems to move slower and high school football trumps all.
given the premise of the show, it sounded like the last drama that i would take an interest in:

  1. it was not an asian drama
  2. it featured heavily on football, a sport that i still can’t make head or tails out of

i’m so glad that i decided to give it a chance - fnl is about so much more than just football.
although friday nights belong to the football games that bring together the entire town, the show uses the other days of the week to take a look into the individual lives of the dillon residents.
given that the majority of the characters come from middle-class, working families, none of the storylines are ever flashy or overly dramatic. the problems dealt with in the show are those common, mundane struggles that are present in all of our lives.
no one on the show is perfect, and so despite trying, they repeatedly fail and make mistakes, and intentionally hurt those around them.

the emotions that the show evoke feel so raw that it sometimes becomes hard to watch, because of how well i can relate to the characters and the feelings they’re going through, and even identify in them those faults and traits that i also share. while watching the show, it is very easy to become drawn in. it almost makes me want to move to their little town in texas.

i found out that the show’s series finale is actually tonight, after airing for five seasons. i’m still on season 3 right now, but already i feel a sad sense of loss that such a great series is coming to an end, and there will eventually come a time to say goodbye to the people of dillon.
it’s a huge shame that this show is so underrated. just watch the pilot, and you’ll understand what i mean. you won’t be able to stop.
